In comparing different models of power supplys, the corsair seemed to fit the bill, be highly reviewed (especially for this model) and be at a good price point. I am very satisfied at this time with my purchase. Since this is a modular build, there are plenty of cords here to fit almost any build. For my purposes, i did not even required every sata slot for example. But it is nice to know i have somewhere to add extra devices should i need it. The cables themselves are of good quality and are pretty flexible so making a clean build isn’t impossible. I mounted this upside down (or right side up mentioning the fan is on the bottom of my case) and the fan doesn’t even come on except in a high-capacity situation. So in actuality, there is little draw on the fan but it is there ready to go just in case. At 750w it is good to know i likely won’t search the limits on this fan. So at this juncture, everything is great (if anything changes i will update the review).
No major issues with installation. I only gave it 3 stars for two reasons. There are no 8 to 6+2 single pcie cables. It only comes with 8 to 6+2 dual pcie cables. So i have two unused 6+2 connectors hanging out under my gpu. The cables do not bend much at the ends. There is a (maybe excessively) large piece of heat shrink at the end of the cables which make them difficult to manage. Instead of curving under the gpu, they stick out so far that they almost touch the window. The 24 pin sticks straight out far enough that it’s almost a 90 degree bend off of the motherboard connection and another to get it through the cable management slot. I’ll be ordering individually sleeved cables soon.
This unit is fully modular was is great but the cables are really stiff for some reason. I spent a lot of time trying to manage the cables to make sure the stiffness wasn’t putting unnecessary stress on the motherboard headers. The 24 pin power cable is so rigid that when i tried to bend it, it felt like it could snap. This psu is not ideal if you hope to achieve a very clean look with your cables. I’m using it in a fractal meshify c and it barely fits, if it was any larger it wouldn’t slide into place. The meshify c is pretty compact so i would not recommend this psu in that case, i’d recommend looking for something smaller. This is more of a case issue but just making a note about the compatibility.
When i was installing my original psu, i noticed through the fan grate there was some grey material inside the unit. I guessed it was some sort of thermal paste or something, maybe even protective gel to prevent electrical arcing. The unit was completely factory sealed, never opened – and yet it had this grey, seemingly solidified goop in the bottom. It was a little weird, but i didn’t think much of it at the time. I’ll get back to this goop later on in my story. Corsair’s psus are rather reputable, and this one features a 10 year warranty. Unfortunately for me, my own power supply died about 2 weeks after installing it in my system. I heard a loud electric crack from my computer, and the entire system immediately shut off. Hitting the power button didn’t do anything.
I searched and searched psu reviews and it seems like no matter what one you look at it, the top 5 reviews are all upvoted 1 star reviews saying dont buy it. I just replaced my corsair cx750m with this new rm850x and it has been lovely. I just replaced a 1070 with a 3080 and ever since i did that, my old cx750m started making a ‘wom wom wom’ noise when i was under full load when playing the new flight sim 2020 with everything cranked to ultra. I was worried it would fry my new card/new cpu/new mobo/etc so i purchased this rm850x and just installed it yesterday. It is fully modular so the cable management was easy. ***however*** all of the other reviews about the cables are completely true. They honestly are hard to work with. Corsair added these heat shrink wraps towards the ends of the cables and they do not bend easily. I personally have a massive case so it wasn’t a big deal for, but i could see it being frustrating using it with a small form factor case. I do appreciate that they added two cpu cables because my new mobo with my 10700k has a 8pin + 4pin input for the cpu which this psu has cables forupon booting for the first time the ‘wom wom wom’ sound is gone and is honestly so quiet i couldn’t even hear it.
