As a software developer i’ve been using ergonomic keyboards my entire career. Recently i’ve been using microsoft surface wireless ergonomic keyboard as i wanted to go wireless. While it was nice, it had a few downsides, so when logitech started selling k860, i jumped on it. Here’s a comparison between the two keyboards:microsoft keyboard:+ slightly better spacing between keys. It wasn’t apparent until i started using the new keyboard. + nice gray look – i prefer it to the all black of logitech. – alcantara wristrest gets dirty (keep in mind i use the keyboard 8-10hr a day), and at some point cleaning it is impossible. It looks like crap- bluetooth only, which has two problems: 1 – can’t access bios settings (since bluetooth is initialized after bios is loaded). And 2, there is sometimes input lag that becomes apparent, especially in games. – function key toggle (switching between media and function keys) is next to alt key, so its easy to hit by mistake.
You probably found the logitech ergo k860 because you were looking at similar keyboards. I work in a multi-os environment, and need to switch between computers and platforms regularly. This bind to all three, and i can move between them without the need for a hardware or software kvm on my desk. I decided to try ergo k860, after roughly 15 years of using a competitor’s ergonomic keyboards. The difference between them is palpable. The recent revisions to those models had many good features, but neither of them were designed for the kind of usage level i require – i found that the key travel and activation transition were way too mushy, and i was bottoming out the keys on almost every stroke. That adds up to a lot of impact over a long work day, and i’ve been noticing that my rms was acting up more than usual for the last few monthsafter using the ergo k860 for several hours, and i’ve not experienced the kind of fatigue and pain that i’ve been dealing with with my other ‘ergonomic’ keyboards. The activation transition is much more defined, and despite a fairly short key travel distance – more laptop-like than desktop keyboard like- i find i’m not bottoming out as often or as vigorously. The keys themselves are notably more stable on their axis of motion, and don’t rock under my fingers, which facilitates building consistent usage habits and fewer missed or doubled keystrokes. I’m also experiencing zero flex from the keyboard itself, which means that i can use a consistent, light touch on all the keys, rather than having to chase key to activation depending on where on the board it it’s placed.
Once i heard that logitech was releasing this new split-style ergonomic keyboard i immediately pre-ordered it. The k860 fixed a few problems i was having with my older k350 ergonomic keyboard (mostly minor issues and personal preference things):-official mac support – the keys on the k860 have the proper command and option key logos/labeling. Not a huge problem, but it would get a little annoying to try and remember that the start key for a windows keyboard was the opt key for mac-specific ones, for example. -slightly smaller size – although its not much smaller, it looks a bit smaller on my desk compared to the k860. This is mostly because of the smaller bezels around the keys, but the keys themselves are normal sized. – caps-lock key light – there is now an led that tells you if caps lock is engaged on the k860-enhanced function keys – the lock button locks my mac, the calculator button opens calculator. Everything with the enhanced function key shortcuts work perfectly now. The split keys were very easy to get used to, i was up to my normal typing speed within an hour. If you are a mac user as well this one is a no-brainer due to official macos support. Although it is much more expensive than the k350 it offers a much better ergonomic design and feels a lot more ‘premium’ thanks to the little touches like the ability to use it via bluetooth, adjust the wrist-rest height, ability to pair with up to three devices, etc.
I have been using microsoft’s wireless keyboard 7000 for years and have bought so many replacements for frozen keys, non reactive keys etc. I even stocked up when i could find decently priced ones on ebay. Every other style that i bought that claimed to be ergonomic was an epic fail until now. Getting tired of repainting letters on my existing microsoft 7000, i saw a logitech one at staples and thought maybe. But after getting it home and finding my wrists bumping and bent because the layout was too straight, i decided to look here. I read review after review, looked at the pictures and thought, why not?i couldn’t be any more happier with this purchase. Right out of the box i liked the feel and look of it but was concerned about the height of the keys themselves as i’ve never really like laptop keyboards and liked to hear the “click” of they key. But after a week of use, i am ecstatic with this keyboard. I have found a new favorite.
